The Girl In The Photograph | Book Review

'When Alice Eveleigh arrives at Fiercombe Manor during the long, languid summer of 1933, she finds a house steeped in mystery and brimming with secrets. Sadness permeates its empty rooms and the isolated valley seems crowded with ghosts - none more alluring than Elizabeth Stanton, whose only trace remains in a few tantalizingly blurred photographs. Why will no one speak of her? What happened a generation ago to mae her vanish?
As the sun beats down relentlessly, Alice becomes ever more determined to unearth the truth about the girl in the photograph - and stop her own life from becoming an eerie echo of Elizabeth's...

I finished this book a couple of hours ago and wanted to write this review ASAP! This has been one of my favourite books of the year, without a doubt. It may not be everyones cup of tea, as it is set in the 1930's and the late 1890's but do not let that put you off. At first i wasn't sure whether i would enjoy this book purely due to the olden day setting but it definitely took me by surprise. It has been such a page turner and i am so gutted that it as finished!
I don't want to give too much away but the story switches between present day(1930's) Alice and past day(1890's) Elizabeth. You get to hear both sides of their story of living down in the valley. And as you can imagine the two stories find a way of linking up. Alice was sent to the valley by her mother and never really understood why - Alice just presumed it was because of an old family friend. But she eventually realises why. Both ladies are preoccupied with their unborn child and what lies ahead of them in this supposed cursed valley. There are so many memories and people who have lived in the house and the grounds and you get to see a little bit of each of them, even though it is sometimes small.
This book is fantastically written - in my opinion. Such a gripping, ghostly story to it. It is one of those books that you will think about all day long and will be wondering about what is going happen next. My mind has been making up little theories ever since i started reading it. A couple of chapters away from the end i was like "omg what if..." and turns out i was right. I won't spoil anything by saying what it was, as i think you'd probably know what i mean once you get to the end.

Highly recommended - Brilliant!
